Since the first index case of the Covid-19 pandemic was announced in Nigeria late February, the country has continued to record increased cases of the deadly virus, recording a whopping 15532 new cases in the month of June.
Data gathered from the website of Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), showed that a total of 15532 new cases were recorded in the month of June, 6739 people recovered and 303 people died from the virus.
This brings the total number of Covid-19 cases in Nigeria to 25694, and the total number of recoveries and deaths at 9746 and 590 respectively as at the 30th June, 2020.
By this data, it could be seen that new cases have continued to grow exponentially, even as more people have recovered and more people have died from the virus. P+ had reported a total of 8230 new cases, 2688 recoveries and 229 deaths in the month of May.
P+ Measurement also gathered that on Week 4 of June 2020, Nigeria saw a historic growth of the virus, as well as recoveries; with a total of 4323 new cases, 2128 recoveries and 47 deaths respectively.
Meanwhile, the World Health Organisation (WHO) have said the worst of the Covid-19 is yet to be seen. This was declared by its Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus, noting that the virus would infect many more people if governments did not start to implement the right policies.
Mr Ghebreyesus while speaking during a media briefing said: “Six months ago, none of us could have imagined how our world – and our lives – would be thrown into turmoil by this new virus.”
“We all want this to be over. We all want to get on with our lives. But the hard reality is, this is not even close to being over,” he said. “Although many countries have made some progress, globally the pandemic is actually speeding up.”
Already, data from worldmeters.info showed that over 10 million people have been infected, and more than 500,000 have died from the virus worldwide.
